Challenge
North Landing HOA in Marietta, Georgia was exploring ways to activate underused common areas around the neighborhood lake while providing meaningful recreational opportunities for residents. I proposed the development of a community disc golf course that could serve players of all ages while requiring minimal environmental impact and relatively low installation cost. The project required course planning, fundraising, community coordination, and visual design to move from concept to reality.
Approach
I designed an 11-hole course layout that integrated with the natural terrain and existing walking areas while minimizing interaction with nearby homes. The project included course mapping, tee pad planning, and environmental signage design to help guide players through the course. I also developed a grassroots sponsorship and donation campaign to fund baskets, signage, and tee infrastructure. Working with local volunteers and a regional disc golf club, we coordinated installation of baskets, tee areas, and signage throughout the property. It later grew to 14, 16, and finally, 18 holes. 2nd tee pads on each hole were soon conceived, fundraised and implemented as well.
Outcome
The North Landing Disc Golf Course transformed previously underutilized land into an accessible outdoor recreation feature for the neighborhood. The construction of the course helped reinvigorate community engagement around the lake area and encouraged increased outdoor activity among residents. Since its installation, the course has also generated meaningful annual revenue for the HOA through disc golf memberships, greens fees, and organized events. Today the course supports regular play, leagues, and tournaments, demonstrating how thoughtful design, community collaboration, and grassroots fundraising can create lasting recreational amenities that strengthen neighborhoods and support sustainable community programming.
